Jan Bernheim

Jan L. Bernheim °25.08.41, is a physician (University of Gent 1966), a medical oncologist (Netherlands Cancer Institute, Amsterdam and Jules Bordet Institute, Brussels 1973), PhD in medical sciences (University of California San Diego and Vrije Universiteit Brussel 1978), Master in Public Management (Université Libre de Bruxelles 1990), Fellow of The American College of Physicians, and Member of The Faculty of Pharmaceutical Physicians of the Royal College of Physicians (London).
His publications include over 100 international peer-reviewed articles, the last few years mainly in the field of the medical humanities. In 1987, he co-edited the book The Quality of Life of Cancer Patients. He contributed several dozens OpEd articles to Belgian newspapers and was an intermittent guest on radio and TV broadcasts.
His third-world activities include teaching, the promotion of family planning and social development projects in Rwanda (1978-1981).
His current research areas include

the Anamnestic Comparative Self Assessment (ACSA), an original cross-culturally applicable method to measure subjective quality of life using an internal biographical standard and

the Patient-Physician Information and Communication Covenant (ICC), a procedural ethics method to maximize patient autonomy irrespective of the cultural context.
- hormonal carcinogenesis, more particularly in relation with exposure to diethylstilboestrol.
He co-founded the first Palliative Care organisation in continental Europe (1979), the European Study Group for Quality of Life of the European Organisation for Research on the Treatment of Cancer (EORTC) (1979), of which he was the first chairperson and in 1984 the International Society for Quality of Life Research (ISOQOL).
In 2006 he retired from theVrije Universiteit Brussel.
He is still a (voluntary) professor and researcher in medical ethics, end-of-life issues and quality of life in the department of Human Ecology, the End-of-Life Care Research Group of the Faculty of Medicine, the Centre for Bio-ethics, the Study Group Evolution and Complexity (ECCO) and the Centrum Leo Apostel for interdisciplinary research of the Vrije Universiteit Brussel. He is a member of the Coma Science Group of the Université de Liège.
